This vs. That: Pros and Cons of Foamex vs Correx

Signboards play a crucial role in advertising, promoting events, and conveying essential information. However, the effectiveness of your signboard depends heavily on the material used.

Today, we’re comparing two popular options: Foamex and Correx.

Let’s explore their pros and cons to help you make an informed decision for your next signage project.

What is Foamboard?

Versatile for most signs, short and long term, Foamboard is known for its durability and smooth finish, earning a reputation for quality performance and endless applications in signage, display, and print. Foamboard is available in 3mm, 5mm, 10mm, and 19mm thicknesses and has been around since 1957, making it one of the most common indoor printed sign materials.

While Foamboard can be utilised as exterior signage for cost-effectiveness, it’s not recommended for long-term outdoor use (please refer to ACP for exterior products and read on for more information).

Foamboard in 5mm, 10mm, and 19mm thicknesses is great for internal names, logos routered to shape with or without locators, or as 3D elements on the foamboard. It can be printed directly onto the surface or wrapped in digital print with laminate for anti-scratching properties and longer life.

What is Correx?

Printed directly onto the board and also available with laminated print for long-lasting durability, Correx is a lightweight, weatherproof corrugated polypropylene board. Similar to Foamboard, it is hard-wearing, affordable, and ideal for indoor or outdoor events, suitable for both short and long-term use. Correx is available in 3.5mm, 5mm, 6mm (8mm and 10mm with self-adhesive vinyl only).

Correx stands out for its toughness and impact resistance. For example, sports stadiums utilise 8mm and 10mm Correx due to its thickness and ability to withstand hits from balls. 5mm and 6mm are commonly used for To Let boards or For Sale boards.

3.5mm Correx is widely used for shorter and more cost-effective signs, such as security signs, fence signs, and advertising signs. Additionally, it’s used for packaging, displays, temporary flooring covers, and various other applications.

This product is PVC free and 100% recyclable, available in various thicknesses and widths to suit your needs.

Comparing Foamboard and Correx

Usability

Foamex Boards

Ease of Installation: Foamex boards are straightforward to fix on walls or doors, using Velcro or drilled holes for hanging. This flexibility makes them an excellent choice for various indoor settings.

Lightweight: Regardless of size, Foamex boards are light and easy to handle, reducing transportation costs and simplifying installation. Even large boards or those made from 10mm Foamex can often be managed without a two-person team.

Correx Boards

Simple Mounting: Correx boards are also easy to mount on surfaces. They can be fixed with Velcro or double-sided tape, particularly in indoor environments.

Lightweight and Shock-Absorbent: Correx is made from corrugated plastic, making it extremely lightweight and easy to transport and install. Its shock-absorbent nature adds durability, especially in high-impact areas.

Value for Money

Foamex Boards

Longevity: Foamex boards offer a budget-friendly solution with a long lifespan. Indoor Foamex boards can last between 2 to 5 years or more, making them a cost-effective option for long-term signage.

Cost-Effective: Compared to materials like plywood, Foamex is easier to produce and replace, fitting almost any marketing budget.

Correx Boards

Non-Toxic and Recyclable: Made from corrugated plastic, Correx is recyclable and non-toxic, ensuring safety and environmental friendliness.

Affordable: Correx boards are an affordable signage solution, making them popular among businesses looking for cost-effective advertising materials.

Versatility

Foamex Boards

Custom Shapes: One of the biggest advantages of Foamex is its versatility. It can be cut into any shape, allowing for creative and eye-catching designs.

Thickness Options: Foamex boards come in various thicknesses, suitable for both indoor (3-5mm) and outdoor (10mm) applications.

Correx Boards

Wide Range of Applications: Correx boards are used for a variety of purposes, including construction site signs, real-estate signs, and advertising boards. They can also be cut into custom shapes as needed.

Varying Thickness: Available in different thicknesses, Correx boards (commonly 4mm) provide stability and strength, especially for outdoor use.

Weather Damage

Foamex Boards

While suitable for outdoor use, Foamex boards aren’t entirely weather-resistant. Prolonged exposure to the elements can cause damage. However, laminating Foamex boards adds a protective layer, making them more resistant to weather and UV rays.

Correx Boards

Despite being very durable, Correx boards can show signs of wear and tear when exposed to extremely harsh weather, including warping, tearing, and fading of the printed design.

The Weather Resistant Alternative: Aluminium Composite

An excellent outdoor signage alternative for Foamex and Correx. Aluminium Composite Panels (ACP) are constructed from two thin sheets of aluminium bonded to a polyethylene core, resulting in a robust and rigid sign that is significantly lighter than solid aluminium. This makes ACP an excellent choice for both indoor and outdoor signs that require durability and longevity.

ACP provides the structural foundation for signs, onto which a digitally printed vinyl graphic is applied. This graphic can be finished with a laminate layer, available in gloss, matt, or anti-graffiti options, enhancing the sign’s appearance and protection. The final product is a highly durable sign that maintains its quality for many years. Browse First Display’s past Aluminium Composite projects here, and contact us for bespoke projects!
